![]() Read on 2 6 How it all started Born on January 13, 1949 in Punjab, Sharma is an alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy. He was in-charge of 21 combat missions in a MiG-21 in the Bangladesh war of 1971. The chosen one On September 20, 1982, he (extreme left, row 1) was selected to fly to space as part of a joint venture between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Soviet Intercosmos space programme. He learnt to speak Russian during his time in Russia. Zero gravity yoga He spent a total of 7 days and 21 hours in space. While he was in space, he practiced the revolutionary zero gravity yoga which was later appreciated by the Rocosmos. Later, Sharma himself advised astronauts to practice yoga to deal with space sickness. He was also felicitated with Ashoka Chakra by the Indian Government.
